Pedagogical evaluation
Using Steplets in mathematics teaching
Steplets are descriped under Applets. Steplets have been evaluated at Buskerud University College (engineering students, on campus teaching) and Sogndal University College (teacher training students, distance education).
At Buskerud College 50 students answered a questionnaire and 86 students used steplets in a compulsory project. Moreever the use of steplets in front of class have been evaluated. At Sogndal College 17 students in distance education evaluated the steplets, 7 ordinary students and 10 inservice teachers.
Convince teachers to use steplets as a tool in mathematics teaching.
Steplets are regarded as very good tools for understanding mathematical methods and learning mathematics. Nearly all students praised the step-by-step option, the core of the steplet concept. As reported: "The option of viewing one step at a time will enforce a process of thinking and trying further by hand". Further: "Steplets are moving focus from detailed calculation techniques to understanding mathematics".
In front of class simulations as requested from the audience may easly be done, otherwise this could be difficult to manage.
Steplets are very good tools to be used in mathematics teaching.
Important: "Steplets may not replace the teacher solving problems on the blackboard, the teacher may help solving individual problems which may not be indentified by the steplets".
In distance education the use of steplets will be especially
important due to the absence of the teacher.
