Web-based learning and tests in Secondary School Mathematics
Last spring i found two secondary level test classes for my research, which was ment to start in the autumn. Pupils are 12-13 years old. My aim is to find out if wed-based exercises and tests can be used also in the lower secondary school mathematics, not only in the upper secondary school and university mathematics.
The course they are having is about Numbers. We didn't have any material for the lower secondary school mathematics. They are using Maple T.A. at their school so during the summer i created material for the 7 weeks course.
The first challenge was the learning material. There wasn't any. There was only questions in the air. What kind of? How hard? How many questions?
The pupils are only 12-13 years old so the material should be in that level. I created the material according to a few course books and curriculum. After the course i can see if it was suitable.
There is a visually handicapped pupil in the test class. I'm really eager to see how she is doing in the course.
The teacher of the classes reported that he is surprised how well web-based learning suits also to young pupils. They are eager to learn, and they do it easy and quickly. For older students Maple T.A. is complicated to start but these young pupils learnt how to use it in couple of hours.
The teacher also reported that the visually handicapped pupil is managing very well and her parents are very pleased. I still need more information about how web-based mathematical problems are making her learning easier.
I hope i'm wiser when the course is over in October.
