Workpackage 1: Management:

The JEM-portal was transferred from the Siteground server to a server in the University of Helsinki. This enables better control, performance and maintainability of the portal.

Workpackage 3: Dissemination and Awareness:

Antti Alamäki, Olga Caprotti, Johanna Lehtinen, Kari Lehtonen, Matti Pauna, and Mika Seppälä attended the 3rd JEM Workshop on January 31 - February 2 in Barcelona. Johanna Lehtinen gave a presentation titled "Web-based exercises in Secondary School Mathematics " describing her study about using interactive web-based mathematics exercises in lower secondary school. Kari Lehtonen presented experiences of using automated diagnostic testing in Stadia polytechnic in his talk "Testing and Teaching Mathematics with Interactive Online Technology". Matti Pauna gave a presentatioin titled "JEM Repository for Learning Objects" which introduced a new repository for storing learning materials together with metadata.

On March 6-9 Olga Caprotti and Matti Pauna attended the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics in San Antonio, Texas and gave a presentation titled "The JEM thematic network and the WebALT On-Line Courses". A paper will appear in the conference proceedings.

On April 17-18 Johanna Lehtinen, Kari Lehtonen, Matti Pauna and Marja-Leena Viljanen attended the Information Technology in Education conference in Hämeenlinna, Finland. A booth was set up where interactive learning tools for mathematics were presented. Also Kari Lehtonen and Marja-Leena Viljanen gave a forum presentation titled "Interactive Exercises in Mathematics".

JEM Seminar on Vodcasting Mathematics was organized in the University of Helsinki in May 23-24 focusing on video production for mathematical topics.

Workpackage 4: Identification of eContent Stakeholders:

The community of Mathematics Education and Research has been identified and activities are in progress to build stronger connection with it. The NORMA08 Study Group and the JEM exhibition and workshop at ICME11 are part of these efforts.

Pedagogy and cognitive psychological aspects of using technology in mathematics education are another area which influence eContent quality. Initial contacts with leading experts in the field are underway.

Workpackage 5: Coordination of Markup Activities:

Olga Caprotti is a member of the MathML Working Group of W3C which is coordinating the design and development of version 3 of the MathML markup standard and making it compatible with the OpenMath standard.

Also support for MathML markup has been added to the portal. This enables authors to write mathematical formulas in their posts. Detailed documentation on how to enable MathML on Drupal web sites has been published.

Workpackage 6: Usage of semantic markup for mathematics in eLearning:

A project started in the Spring 2008 to restructure and further develop the interactive exercise repository which contains over 1000 mathematical exercises in several school levels. The material is classified according to mathematical topic and also a tool is being developed to import these questions to the repository and automatically create suitable metadata for them.
