Semester 4, UvA
The mission of the Higher Education Group at the Science Faculty in the AMSTEL Institute is to improve mathematics, science, and technology education at this faculty. Quality of education is the guideline of activities:
• Initiation and guidance of innovation projects
• Didactic guidance and support of teachers
• Didactic training of staff members
• Advice to teachers and management
This is reflected in the activities of the reported period
1. review of proposals for the 2008 SIGMA (Special Interest Group Mathematics Activities) award;
2. finalization of the NKBW project (Nationale Kennisbank Basisvaardigheden Wiskunde, National Knowledge Bank on Basic Skills in Mathematics), a joint project with 13 Dutch higher education institutes (including JEM partner TUE).
Project site: http://www.nkbw.nl, Project leader: L. van Gastel (UvA).
3. application of the NKBW2 project (granted) as a follow-up project aiming at
(1) extension of the use of materials and experiences of 18 trajectories for transfer between secondary school and higher education via the NKBW repository, (2) improvement of the repository (3) reaching convergence between secondary and tertiairy education with regards to assessment of algebrac skills, and (4)
use of diagnostic tests in 20 secondary schools and 18 trajectories for transfer between secondary school and higher education institutes.
4. Application of the project "e-classes as vehicles for the transfer between secondary and higher education" (granted) in the framework of the ITS Academy (www.itsacademy.nl) in which 16 e-learning modules will be developed and tested for the upcoming secondary school curriculum (especially in the subjects (1) Mathematics D (2) Physics and (3) NLT (Nature, Life, Technology).
5. Development of the Learning & Teaching in Higher Education Programme (BKO).
(http://www.science.uva.nl/research/amstel/dws/lthe/) This programme it provides all new members of its academic staff with the opportunity to develop their didactic skills. The first step in this process is the Cerificate Programme in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education (in Dutch BKO). This programme provides all new members of its academic staff with the opportunity to develop their didactic skills. The first step in this process is the Certificate Programme in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education (in Dutch BKO). This programme starts each academic year in October and finishes in June.
6. Application of the EU-project MOSEM2. The MOSEM2 project aims to contribute to changing this situation in a positive way by promoting lifelong learning in physics and pedagogy for science teachers at the upper secondary level through offering a range of modelling tools based on existing commercial and non-profit solutions, as well as the outcomes of previous related Leonardo projects.
1. Toetsen@UvA, a small project aiming at improvement of the Maple T.A. question banks on Basic Mathematics and further development of question banks for mathematics courses at the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. I also involves testing the new Blackboard Building block of MapleTA 4.0
2. Preparation of the mathematical diagnostic test of the first year students at the Science Faculty of UvA.
3. Support to other UvA users of MapleTA, especially with the transition of Blackboard and MapleTA to newer releases.
4. Maintenance of FNWI Gradebook tools
