Interactive Learning Objects for Linear Algebra

In this talk we report on several interactive learning objects (LO) integrated in the teaching of the Linear Algebra course. This course is a first year, first semester course offered by the Mathematical Department for all but one Major at Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon. It is our believe that an undergraduate student of Linear Algebra can achieve a more deeply understand of the subject if we connect topics, such as vectors and matrices, computer graphics and matrices and change of basis with visualization and interactivity. For this matter we developed several flash manipulatives LO that allow the student to become aware of the role of matrices in rotating, reflecting, shearing, scaling and translating 2-d objects. We also have one learning object, which allows the student to change basis geometrically with a visualization of the changing of the grid for the coordinates. Finally, there are series of assessment online questions, multiple-choice questions, on the topics vectors and matrices, which make use of the LO and are meant to be a learning check for students and a control check for teachers.
