Tutorial on the translation of mathematical content in GF

The tutorial gives an introduction to GF, Grammatical Framework, which is used in WebALT for the translation of mathematical exercises to seven languages. Aimed for beginners not knowing GF but having some background in programming and mathematics, the tutorial has the goals of enabling the participants to

  • write simple applications in GF
  • use the resource grammar libraries of GF
  • extend the WebALT translator to new mathematics concepts
  • understand the potentials and limitations of GF-based translation

The tutorial consists of three sessions, taught by Aarne Ranta (AR) and Jordi Saludes (JS)

  • GF from scratch (AR)
  • Using the GF resource grammar library (AR)
  • GF in WebALT (JS)

WebALT Mathematical Grammar Libraries

As a result of this tutorial, the WebALT MGL will be released under a Open Source license in the upcoming days. Thanks to Aarne, it is now compiling with the latest release of GF.

Online demo of Mathematical Grammar Library

This demo is running at Chalmers and shows the new completion feature of GF 3.0 driven by the mathematical grammar library. Thanks to Aarne and to Jordi for fixing up the sources.

Instructions

Type a space to get prompted the possible choices validated by the grammar rules. To get a translation, type a space, a fullstop, and a space. The translation will appear if the sentence is considered complete.
