    <title>odt2tbook has just received an award</title>

    <summary type="html"><![CDATA[<p>odt2dtbook has recently received the OpenOffice.org Community Innovation Program Gold Award. This award recognises work carried out with Vincent Spiewak on the development of the odt2dtbook, an OpenOffice.org-writer “export to DTBook XML” extension (see <a href="http://chezdom.net/blog/?p=61" title="http://chezdom.net/blog/?p=61">http://chezdom.net/blog/?p=61</a>). The story was published yesterday on Sun website: <a href="http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/media/features/2008-0924/" title="http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/media/features/2008-0924/">http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/media/features/2008-0924/</a>, including an interview of several winners.</p>
<p>Thanks a lot to the OpenOffice.org community and to Sun Microsystems. It means so much that an Assistive Technology project gets this kind of award.</p>

    <summary type="html"><![CDATA[<p>JEM Server was down most of Saturday, September 27.  The reason for this seems to be a distributed attack (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ddos#Distributed_attack" title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ddos#Distributed_attack">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ddos#Distributed_attack</a>) to our server bringing the server down.  We are taking action to prevent this in the future.</p>

<p><strong>Impact of ICT on the Teaching of Mathematics and on the Mathematics Curriculum</strong><br />

<p>The focus of the Workshop is the <em>Impact of Technology in the Teaching of Mathematics</em>.<br />
On one hand, technology is affecting the content of the mathematics curricula at different levels, and, on the other hand, technology supports traditional teaching, and makes the delivery of mathematics education more efficient. </p>
<p>The theme of the workshop is to discuss the extent to which technology should change the actual content of the various mathematics curricula, and how it could be best used to enhance traditional teaching.  This includes the use and the further development of various assistive technologies.<br />

In Norway, dynamic geometric programs, such as <a href="http://www.geogebra.org/" title="GeoGebra" rel="homepage" class="zem_slink">GeoGebra</a>, are being introduced in the high school classrooms.  In the US, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr1qee-bTZI" title="Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth" rel="youtube" class="zem_slink">TERC</a> reform has lead to a new mathematics curriculum, which is being accompanied by the reform affected by the book Everyday Mathematics.  The workshop will address these and related themes from the European point of view.</p>
<p>Topics include but are not limited to:</p>
<ul>
<li>impact of ICT on mathematics curriculum</li>
<li>pedagogical aspects of ICT in the classroom</li>
<li>case studies on ICT in mathematics</li>
<li>assistive technologies in mathematics education</li>
<li>cognitive studies relevant to mathematics education</li>
</ul>
<h3>Format</h3>
<p>The workshop will include invited presentations by leading experts in pedagogical aspects of ICT in mathematics education and contributed presentations. </p>

<p>The 4th JEM workshop will be organized to disseminate the technologies and activities of members of the network. It will create the opportunity to experience, with guided activities, the latest developments in software and tools that improve the way mathematics can be communicated and taught online. Within the JEM community, there is a wealth of experience in preparing interactive lecturing material, in developing and programming with mathematical software and in delivering mathematical lectures using a variety of learning environments. This training day offer you the possibility to actively organize a session with people who share the same interests as you do and are interested in learning about your way of using the technologies. </p>
<h3>Organizational Details</h3>
<p>The tutorials will take place at the Gløshaugen campus at NTNU, in the Realfagbygget building. See the <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=no&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=104392005243546092448.000001134fff57f06d2b8&amp;om=0&amp;ll=63.429478,10.383453&amp;spn=0.025185,0.073471&amp;z=13">map</a> for all important venues of the meeting.</p>
<p>The tutorials include hands-on exercises. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops in order to profit at best from the activities.</p>
<h3>Signup (Last minute!)</h3>
<p>Registration to a tutorial is possible by signing up here on the description page of the tutorial. You need to be logged into the JEM portal in order to access signup. <strong>To register for one or more tutorials, login to the website, click on the tutorial description page, then use the signup form at the bottom of the page.</strong></p>
<p>Otherwise, if you are registered for the workshop, modify your <a href="http://www.ntnu.no/delta/workshop/registration.php">registration</a> by including the tutorials you plan to attend.</p>
<h3>Call for proposals (closed)</h3>
<p>Proposals for hands-on tutorial sessions should contain a brief description of the activities, specific requirements (laptop with internet, with CDROM) and clearly indicate prerequisites and intended outcome for the participants.<br />
<em>Submit your tutorial proposal by (registering,) logging in, and creating a new <a href="add/diss-item">Dissemination item</a>. You should enter under "Publication details" the following: JEM Training Day - Trondheim</em>. </p>
<p>The JEM Steering Committee will evaluate the proposals and arrange the final program schedule.</p>
<h4> Registration </h4>
<p>The JEM Training Day is free for those registered with the <a href="http://www.ntnu.no/delta/workshop/">4th European Workshop on Mathematical &amp; Scientific e-Contents</a> while it costs 200 NOK (about 25 Eur) for other participants.<br />
