Portal Architecture
The JEM portal page offers relevant information at first glance: a main menu, a central content area with latest news and welcome message, and side column boxes that highlight events, registration/login form, calendar, most popular items and statistical information. In this way, first time readers are very likely to find what they are looking for only by one click. The main menu provides links to the Network Association Rules, to a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and to addresses and contact information.

The portal currently is open for user registrations and accepts posts from registered users. Posts can be news or longer articles. Registered users have the option to write a short profile and list their competences. The list of registered users is presently not browsable by anonymous readers but if the network decides in favour, we can make it open. Since we have not yet started to promote the web site, we currently have only 23 registrations, mostly within the nodes of the JEM network.
News and events can be submitted and edited by registered users directly on the web site by logging in, however, it is also possible to enable automatic news aggregation from partners' web site that offer RSS newsfeeds. The JEM portal offers such a newsfeed, namely, any news item published at the portal can be automatically fetched and distributed by third-party news aggregators and readers. Currently there are no subscriptions to automatic newsfeeds. News items are categorized according to a small taxonomy. Based on the category, an event may be highlighted on the front page.
Registered partners also have the opportunity to write short articles that describe their research unit or projects. So far, only very few users have taken this opportunity to disseminate their activities and the list of "Related Projects" is very short.
A collection of Frequently Asked Questions presently contains answers to questions such as how to become a member of JEM or how to get travel costs reimbursed. The list of questions will probably grow in the future to include information about the network activities.
The deliverables of the JEM Network are presently hosted at the URL http://www.jem-thematic.net/results. These are pages for collaborative, wiki-like editing of online handbooks, blogs, stories and hosts a forum for discussions. Users need to register in order to be able to comment on the contents and to create their own pages.
