Semester 5, UPC

Reporting_period:
Semester 5: 1/08/08 - 31/01/09
Workpackage 2: Assessment and Evaluation:

Freshman diagnostic test (Sebastian Xambó, with the collaboration of Francesc Massanés and Rosa Estela)

2nd version of the freshman mathematics diagnostic test at the "Facultat de Matemàtiques i Estadística" of the Tecnical University of Catalonia. Programmed in MapleTA and available in English, Spanish and Catalan. Administered on September 9, 2008. Several bugs from the first version (September 2007) were corrected. Statistics to compare 1st and 2nd versions were generated. A version including physics questions was administered at the Civil Engineering School of the Technical University of Catalonia. See http://www.jem-thematic.net/en/node/1279.

Workpackage 3: Dissemination and Awareness:

Participation in JEM Activities

  • JEM Training Day - Trondheim
-Jordi Saludes (+talk)
-Sebastian Xambó
  • JEM Pedagogical Seminar (Finnish Institute, Paris, 27-28 November 2008)
-Jordi Saludes (+talk)
-Sebastian Xambó (+talk)
  • AMS Special Session on Computational Algebraic and Analytic Geometry for Low‐dimensional Varieties (Washington DC, 5-8 January, 2009)
-Sebastian Xambó (+talk)
Workpackage 6: Usage of semantic markup for mathematics in eLearning:

Web materials and resources (Sebastian Xambó)

Error-Correcting Codes
-Lecture notes and exercises for the Fall 2008 Semester available (in English) at '''Coding Theory'''.
Geometry
-Lecture notes and exercises for the Spring 2008 Semester made available (in Catalan) at '''Geometria'''. Plans are to make this material available in English.
- Materials online at the JEM portal on Stokes theorem (work in progress: 3 chapters out of 4).

Web Computation Interfaces (Sebastian Xambó,with the collaboration of Francesc Massanés)

Design and implementation of the following Java interfaces (work in progress by Sebastian Xambó and Francesc Massanés):
-TAU, a general purpose mathematical computation engine;
-CC, that gives free access to the CC package ((c) SX) for computations with block error-correcting codes. This has been used in class online, including examination sessions.
- WIT, that gives free access to the WIT package ((c) SX) for computations in "intersections theory". This interface, and recent computations using it, were the main ingredients of the AMS Special Session presentation (see attachments).
