Semester 4, UOC
The UOC partner member is now inside the NET2LEARN research group of the UOC (as the result of joining two previous research groups that had a lot of common interests in e-learning, namely CIMANET and PERSONAL). Other researchers have also joined the group, so NET2LEARN is now the largest e-learning group at UOC, covering the following research areas:
•User modeling and personalization in virtual learning environments.
•Formalization of the learning process by means of ontologies.
•Semantic learning object repositories.
•Mathematical e-learning: educational technology and methodological strategies.
The main activities during the 2007-2008 period have been the following:
•Specific JEM founded activities: (1) Co-organizing, jointly with the UPC JEM member the third JEM Workshop in Barcelona on January 2008. (2) Presentation of two communications on the third JEM workshop
•Developing the PERSONAL(ONTO) project which is expected to finish September 2009. The main results of this project can be found in the project web site (http://net2learn.uoc.edu/).
•Learning object repositories: this subject has attracted a lot of attention, mainly because of the PERSONAL(ONTO) project which uses learning object repositories as part of the proposed learning environment architecture, but also because UOC has finally accepted the need of creating digital repositories for managing all the educational content. Several pilot experiences are currently being developed, namely a learning object repository for mathematical and statistical resources (both internal and external funds have been requested for this project) and a digital repository for multimedia resources.
•Accessibility: several members are involved in projects related to accessibility issues in virtual environments. C. Casado is finishing his Master Thesis work on “Evaluation of automatic web accessibility revision processes”, and M. Galofré is finishing hers on “Identifying technological, methodological and organizational barriers in virtual learning environments”, which has been submitted to ASSETS 2008. A pilot project funded by IBM for creating simpler ATMs adapted to people with disabilities is also being developed during 2008.
•Currently now we are working in the several journal papers which are expected to be submitted during 2008 (and hopefully published in 2009):
- “Analysis of user navigational behavior in virtual learning environments”, E. Mor and J. Minguillón. This paper resumes the main results obtained in the aforementioned Ph.D. thesis.
- “Personalization of the learning process by means of adaptive itineraries”, D. Masip and J. Minguillón. This paper describes an experiment we carried out with a course in Computer Graphics where all the resources were available only online, and students were able to determine their own pace and learning paths. We analyze the paths followed by the students and the relationship between navigational behavior, academic performance and user satisfaction.
- “Metadata for describing learning scenarios under the EHEA paradigm”, A. Guerrero and J. Minguillón. This paper is an extension of other presented at MTSR 2007, regarding the use of e-learning standards (IMS Learning Design, IEEE Learning Object Metadata) and ontologies for describing learning itineraries based on competences.
-“Mathematical e-learning and EEES at the Spanish university level”, M.A. Huertas, A. Juan and C. Steegmann. This paper summarizes the EA Spanish project “Mathematical e-leaning” finished on April 2008. The project web page is also available . The use of a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) is the major methodological trend.
-“An open and collaborative repository for locutions of mathematical formulas”. M.A. Huertas, M. Pascual and C. Córcoles. This paper describes an innovative project we are carrying out with the design and implementation of an open and collaborative digital repository of a very special multimedia objects: locutions of mathematical formulas. These locutions will be used in mathematical learning objects for virtual mathematical courses.
